I've been FRAMED!

Once upon a time…

There was a Dixie State University student. Every day, she would go online and do research, explore, and interact with friends and family. One day while doing research, she discovered that she’d been framed. But by who, and why?  She stumbled across some data that was indicating she was wasn’t who she really thought she was. They were saying that she watched YouTube videos on hygiene and toiletries. Being the age she was, she felt that she had a pretty good grasp on how to take care of herself. After all, she had raised three beautiful daughters and had taught them the practices of maintaining health and preventing disease through cleanliness. Perhaps someone had been using her laptop when she wasn’t looking. Perhaps someone had hacked into her account. Perhaps, this person was putting in the wrong algorithms.
Throughout further investigation, she saw that she was being framed as person who listens and watches You Tube videos involving Reggae style music. It was alleged that some of the influences on her were Jamaican dancehall and Latin American hip hop. Vocals that included rapping and singing typically in Spanish. It was suggested that most of the music she was was listening to had lyrics of a hip hop nature. At this point she was becoming concerned. She knew this could not be correct. She was not a Reggaeton. Her music tastes were more diverse than that. Not only were the music allegations amiss, she could not speak an ounce of Spanish unless she needed to count to ten. Although, this made her chuckle a little. She was worried what her friends and family might think. They would wonder what she might be doing behind closed doors, when no one was home. She had no were to go, she had to get help from someone.
At finding this disconcerting information she turned to Facebook for more answers. Who did Facebook think she was? What were her friends and family seeing? Were her friends and family being influenced by her posts? She learned that Facebook was also framing her. Fortunately the Facebook frame was much more her size, or at least a little more truthful. Facebook was saying that she loves photography. She is obsessed with the news. She thought that obsessed was going a little overboard though. Facebook also said that she wastes time watching videos on Bark Vines. She thought to herself…what does it hurt to watch a few feel good videos and stories about her favorite types of animals? She saw that a lot of her friends and family were talking about her. This she didn’t mind as much. As long as it was all good stuff. The only thing she was a little embarrassed about, was all her feeds relating to FOOD! She watched, and shared a lot of videos and recipes. So she likes to cook, right?
Back to the first culprit. She has been friends with Google for such a long time. How could Google do this to her. Google was saying things about her that just weren’t true. Google said, she was into athletic apparel, bicycles, and fitness. Did Google not know who she really was. She had no interest in bicycles, after all she was a college student trying to get an education (which Google of course mentions also).
What she was most upset about is the fact that Google hadn’t even mentioned the fact that she was a photographer, or even liked photography. Could Google no longer see her for who she was. Google was indicating that she was consumed with hair care, make-up, cosmetics, fashion and style, and jewelry. While these things were important to her, and she liked them, she didn’t feel like they were controlling her life as Google was claiming.
Until finally, she thought…Google You’ve Been Caught! You have your algorithms all crossed. She decided she wasn’t going to sit back and let Google continue to frame her. Google would no longer be her friend, at least for now. The DSU student can only hope for a brighter future. A future where everyone can see her for who she is, and not be influenced by the framing attempts of Google and Facebook.

Facebook Analysis

FACEBOOK PAGE

Photography in Southern Utah can be a challenging profession. With technology, social media, and availability of camera equipment, anyone and everyone is a photographer. I have been involved in photography since I was a freshman in high school. I have professionally been in photography for about 18 years. For many of those years I used a medium format film camera. I had a darkroom in my house, developing both my own film and photographs. Boy have things changed! I have learned that being a photographer means following the trends and staying up-to-date on equipment.

My target markets are unique in the fact that they are all individuals looking to have someone take photographs for them. Yet, they are all very different in the type of photography they are seeking. The following are a few of the images that I have taken over the course of this semester. In analyzing my social media campaign, I was excited to have come pretty close to what I anticipated.

Here is a link to my Social Media Campaign

Productive Activity
At first my post were slow to get attention, other than the bridals. Being new at having a Facebook page, I looked at my prior posts. I came to the realization that if I posted only a few images, people were more likely to become engaged. My post clicks almost tripled. The other thing I have noticed is that by tagging someone my likes increased, as well as the post reach, and engagement. I have tried to make my posts a little more personal, which I believe has helped. Rather than being static, I wanted to write something that make the post personal and meaningful to those I had photographed. It worked very well by sharing my posts on my home page. It helped to draw a lot of attention to my work. I have been photographing non-stop since I started using social media as a means of advertising.

A Work In Progress
Posting more than 3-4 photos does not work. The saying, "Do more, with less," has a lot of wisdom in it. An article in Forbes Magazine talks about this very thing. It's all about having a strategic plan. I'm learning more, and more that the more simple you keep it, the better. This is especially true when it comes to photography. You only want to showcase the best. I feel that by showcasing the best of the best, it intrigues people to investigate and see more. I have also noticed that posting during certain times during the day make a difference. Most of the posts that I posted in the morning didn't seem to get as much attention as my post after 3:00 PM.

One thing I had planned on doing was using Instagram to cross-promote my photography. I didn't do a very good job at doing this. Those images that I did post, did get a lot of comments and likes. One thing I struggle with on this one is how people post the same thing on both Instagram and Facebook. One thing that I would like to try is maybe post a different image with a slightly different caption on Instagram, and different images on Facebook. The last thing I didn't follow through with was getting testimonials. Although, I feel that I only partially failed on this one, because of the comments that I received. I was excited to see that I had comments from individuals that I photographed almost 20 years ago. I think that this speaks volumes, more so than actually asking people to write testimonials.

Besides portrait photography, I also enjoy product photography. I noticed that on these posts I didn't get the response I was looking for. As I continue to post, I will occasionally throw in one or two of my products. In hopes that I can show my versatility as a photographer. I may have to figure out a way to engage more people in these types of photographs. My goal is to continue showing my work, and progression.

My overall analysis of my Facebook page was better than I expected it to be. I am amazed at the response I have received. For the past 18 years I have been a photographer by word of mouth. Referrals has been my method of advertising up until this point. Up until now I have been busy as a photographer, and mainly considered my photography as a hobby. I love being a photographer. I truly have experienced the power of advertising through social media. As I near the end of my career as a student at Dixie State University, I see the potential in my future by using social media. At this point, I don't feel like I have the time to commit to advertising on social media as much as I would like to. By analyzing my social media campaign, I have tried to incorporate my mission statement into all of my photo shoots. As I continue my career in photography, I will take into account all of the things I have learned in doing this.
